How To Brush Baby Teeth

It’s true that baby teeth are only temporary, but that doesn’t mean they’re not important! In fact, it’s necessary to keep your child’s baby teeth in excellent condition in order to avoid cavities, tooth decay, and other oral issues. You also want to create routine for your child so they grow up to have healthy brushing habits.

When Do You Start Brushing Your Baby’s Teeth?

You can start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as your baby has teeth! But brushing baby teeth is not like brushing regular teeth. You can use a damp washcloth or a finger brush to gently wipe your baby’s teeth. At this point in their life they don’t need excess chemicals in their mouths.

Can Babies Use Toothpaste?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), you can start using fluoride toothpaste immediately on your baby’s first tooth.  However, it’s important to only use a very small amount. To start, you should only be using a thin, rice-grain sized amount. When they get a little older, around 3 years old, you can switch to a pea-sized amount.

If you can get your young one to try out brushing for his or her self, let them give it a try. It’s a good idea to let them build routine around brushing their own teeth. Watch your child as they brush and be sure to brush their teeth yourself afterwards to make sure they’re thoroughly clean.
